Project Het Platform
Like many former industrial areas once located at the edge of a city, De Nieuwe Stad in Amersfoort has gradually evolved into a centrally positioned and compelling development site within an expanding urban context.
Compared to the neighbouring historic centre, the scale here is larger and the architecture more restrained. Through the transformation and densification of Hal 6, the project Het Platform introduces a new urban and programmatic layer to the area.
Situated directly beside Amersfoort’s main railway station, the site of Het Platform—together with its urban surroundings—forms an ideal setting for high-density living. Prior to the building design, we conducted an urban study for the area’s transformation. Het Platform is the first architectural intervention in a series of envisioned, provocative additions that engage with and respect the existing urban fabric. Its design draws on the industrial poetry and deliberate “non-design” of De Nieuwe Stad’s heritage—shaped by economic pragmatism and functionality.
Technically more a bridge than a building, the structure spans above the existing warehouse without making physical contact. It is supported by seven monumental red steel trusses, positioned in alignment with the rhythm of Hal 6, placing Het Platform in a deliberate dialogue with its context. Hal 6, with its long and low profile, is defined by a clear and simple volume. In response, the new addition adopts a direct language of form, material, and detailing—straightforward, robust, and without unnecessary transitions.
